First I will say that this in no way reflects upon the exemplary service or low price of the provider of this book, Now that I have prefaced this review by stating that the company that provided me the book gave me 5 star service My first impression of the book is that even among textbooks which are horribly overpriced this shines as an example of why some people who shouldn’t be writing in the first place write textbooks regardless of their lack of talents.
It hearkens to the old adage regarding those who can’t do, teach. Apparently those who can neither do or teach write books about it. A perfect example is the chapter in which the exercises are to add words to “enhance coherence” in an already coherent sentence The word coherent includes clarity as a portion of its definition, in fact if a paragraph lacks clarity it is almost certain to lack coherence.

I cannot help but believe there had to be a better book on the market that a teacher could use for this subject. Another point that I find lacking is that typically in English, a student is taught to use “economy of words”, this text; however, seems to shun that advice and works under the premise that in technical writing you must expect every reader to be a dullard who is unable to connect two sentences into a common thread.
However, I will say that this book can cure insomnia, so it is not without some measure of worth if you have sleepless nights. One person found this helpful. From my own experience, all of the information provided by this book was either taught to me in high school, or is mostly basic, common knowledge.
No offense meant, but it’s more of a textbook written by English professionals for Engineers, and it comes across as such. Honestly, I found a fair amount of information presented by the book to directly conflict with what I found to be very successful report writing in numerous engineering courses.
If anything, this book would make good reference material, but I found myself using Google more often than it when I had to provide citations for a course. Unless you absolutely have to, I’d avoid buying this. I have rented this book but I am thinking about buying it despite its large price.
There are so many useful and practical things in this book and I am not just saying this. Most of the time I only rent my books because most of the time I know I will only use it one or two times and the rest of my answers for my classes can be answered by google.
This book is filled with tons of practical information that you can use in numerous situations for ex resume’s, memo’s, cover letters, instructions, definitions, brochures, ocmmunication letters in general. The information in this book helped me get two job one as a supervisor and another as an office assistant i’m only 20 and I have only had it for a few months.
If your are thinking about renting this book and do have the money to buy it i highly recommend that you buy it to save yourself the trouble of deciding to buy it after rented it.
A required book for a technical writing course I took, Technical Communication by Mike Markel is a surprisingly good reference. The examples are rich in detail allowing you to emulate the good format using your own information. Tecgnical major writing papers due in the course had equivalents lanhon in the book, providing constant guidance for the structure and content needed to create a professional product.
The exercises are mostly trivial in difficulty, with a few coommunication them required an absurd amount of writing lannoon such a short question.
A good resource to have if you’re learning technical writing. I was required to utilize this book for an upper division business writing course, so thinking I probably tschnical even open it much I rented it. By the end of the quarter, I wish I would have purchased it, as it turned out to have really good advice for when you enter the workplace in terms of resumes, cover letters, and memorandums. I took a technical writing class a few semesters ago and this book helped me alot.
I passed the class with an A. Lots of good stuff in here. From business writing to resume building this book is probably one of the only books I can say that has information you will actually need for the real world.
Author did an excellent job. This text provides specific information about writing emails, memos, letters and reports in a professional setting. I’ve learned about “communication abuse” and other ethical issues. Examples are included regarding how to write and how not to write.
I look forward to finishing the book; then perhaps my review will be more exciting! Don’t use this book on a Kindle, if you need it. Kindle Edition Verified Purchase. I’ve read similar books and they had a better view on how to write this information. I also hated the way it was set on my Kindle.
I couldn’t read anything because technival was so small and I had to zoom in. It constantly tried highlighting words when I was just trying to follow where I was reading.
That’s how bad this was. See all reviews. What other items do customers buy after viewing this item? Technical Communication 13th Edition Paperback. There’s a problem loading this menu right now. Learn more about Amazon Prime.
