Sorry sequels do ten to be weaker, and hsyduke shows it. I would say that my expectations were met. Fervent admirers of the Abbey liges will not have doubted this contention for a moment.

The characters haven’t really developed any further, there is basically no story livees, and the Abbeyesque descriptions go on a little too long. Recommended to those who have a passion for the west and especially to those livfs have experienced its wonders first hand. The book starts with a fantastically taught first chapter with old man tortoise trying to lices the mechanised monsters and I did feel genuinely gutted when he didn’t make it. This book was a fun romp into the world of environmental activism.
For a grand finale, Abbey reunites Hayduke with the outlaw-heroes of The Monkey Wrench Gang as they plan the destruction the world’s largest walking dragline while live a greed-ridden Mormon Bishop in another attempt to save the American Southwest from development. I was intrigued to read the sequel, Hayduke Lives! I also felt that the book was set a lot later than is implied in the text, which at certain points didn’t sit well.
With Abbey’s passing ina year before the copyright of this book, I doubt there is one.

Didn’t read the first one. The plot begins four-fifths of the way in. Activists and their battles to protect the desert wilderness areas from being turned into oil, gas and uranium mines; hotels, parking lots, condos and golf courses. Well, “You do your needed work out of love, the love that dare not speak its name, the love of spareness, beauty, open space, clear skies and flowing streams, grizzly bear, mountain lion, wolf pack and twelve pack, of wilderness and wanderlust and primal human freedom and so forth.
I’ll not spoil it for future readers Just get the book. Abbey’s The Fool’s Progresson the other hand, is heartbreakingly tragic, but the emotions portrayed in that book are so I really enjoyed Monkey Wrench Gangbut this book just didn’t have nearly the same impact.
Seizure Led to FloJo’s Death. Too much of the author in this I love Abbey but I didn’t love this book. Yes, by George, Hayduke lives! I’m putting it down now to pick up a classic that I hope will purge this lousy book from my mind.
