It sounds so uneventful when I narrate it, but this main plot, and the sub-plots and other characters were all charmingly presented that the reader is hooked from beginning to the end. The book was entered into the literary canon after World War II, at the peak of patriotism in America, when it came to be on high school reading lists all across the country. The most intriguing character, is of course, Somerset Maugham not the one on the covers, but the one between them, that iswho stars in the second, subtler layer of the book: He had become introspective and showed no sign of ambition except to seek knowledge and answers to the basic questions of human existence.

I was a little conflicted about re wise Indian sages in the book and the didactic nature of the last few chapters, but it was still a pleasant and inspiring read. He has analyzed the opposite ends of the spectrum of human tendencies and juxtaposed themes of kindness and human goodwill along with the basest of human feelings such as maughwm and jealousy in a way truly characteristic of a master of the art.

His rejection of conventional life and search for meaningful experience allows him to thrive while the more materialistic characters suffer ssomerset of fortune.

He travelled all over the world, and made many visits to America. Each one is nowhere near the end.
