Depending on what radius ground level was at, Jupiter could have a truly immense desertlon to explore, enough to fill lifetimes without ever going back to revisit anything. The pace of the story really drags, despite it being fairly short.

As mankind abandons the cities, each family becomes increasingly isolated. With regards to our understanding of terraforming, it seems that transforming into native species rather than transforming the environment is a slightly better strategy. He eventually does return, to share with all humankind what he has discovered. The story also implies that the human method of colonisation is inherently flawed in that it separates itself from the environment, but also that the human mindset is petty and limited.

Young People Read Old SFF | Desertion

What they want to understand is if it is possible to build a civilization and colonize Jupiter. The hostile environment of Jupiter doesn’t permit humans to walk its surface and so a biological converter is used to transform humans into Lopers, the highest form of native life.
