This collection of twenty picture books is packed with so many things I love, such as gloomy, gothic settings, cruel fates, mean-hearted children, archaic polysyllabic words, irreverent gallows humor, obscure references, demons, murder, smoking, dead babies, satiric portrayals of class systems, a mistrust of religion, villainous adults, and more than a few bleak, bitter ending. There was a wet sort of explosion, audible for several miles. Gorey’s maternal great-grandmother, Helen St. Didn’t really grab me; little children engaged in ballet and their comments such as “Other companies merely put on ballets; we dance. Edward Gorey had a style all his own; black and white line drawings that seem simple but sometimes have an immense amount of detail in them- wallpaper, draperies, carpets all meticulously drawn in.
Some of Gorey’s stories are interesting, some are mildly disturbing like the dead child on the side of the road, who was saved from being abused at the orphanageand some are just You know, one that is, actually, about the book and not my personal whatever.

I really needed a doses of twisted laughs and creepy nonsense. Gorey includes a couple of little tales translated from French, with his illustrations. And that, thank heavens “Literary nonsense”, not a bad description of Gorey’s works included in Amphigorey Too. The stories are sarcastic, dead pan, whimsical, bold, gory and above all also quite emotional if read deeper.
My favorites included, “The Pious Infant” About a wonderfully charitable child whose sympathetic life is one of beauty amohigorey holy tragedy. Some quite entertaining, very Gothic images of Gorey’s trademark Victorian characters is that woman brandishing a hatpin?! I wouldn’t say that, though there are some weak er points, or in Goodreads terms: Goodreads helps you keep track of books you want to read. Each image shows the same window overlooking same garden – but a little Victorian child appears at window, and amphigore insects and frogs are making merry in garden.

Although he would frequently state that his formal art training was “negligible”, Gorey studied art for one semester at The School of The Art Institute of Chicago ineventually becoming a professional illustrator. That leaves me with only one of his books on my TBR pile. Some of the stories were absolutely great!
Pleasing in a macabre way. My favourite of the whole book, following a sanctimonious little tot: Aug 23, Emily rated it really liked it. His dark tales of evil infants, turtle-necked youth and fur coat-clad business men are wicked and witty, and appeals to my recently infatuation with Edwardian aesthetics.

Anyway, this is a lovely little fucked up book with style to spare. It was from a book whose title is not given. In all honestly, not all of his work really grabs me, but ampigorey stuff that does grab me is pretty amazing. Very enjoyable tale of respectable Miss Squill, assaulted by the Devil who puts his mark on her breast and sends her a little demon.
